HERNDON, Va.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--ITT Corporation (NYSE:ITT) today announced the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has declared In-Service Decision (ISD) for the Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) broadcast services system in southern Florida. ADS-B is a key component of the FAA's Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) intended to increase safety and efficiency to meet the growing needs of air transportation. Achievement of this major milestone clears the way for national deployment of broadcast services, scheduled for completion by 2013.

The essential services ISD milestone recognizes the FAA's successful completion of a systematic and exhaustive validation of the ADS-B essential services deployed by ITT. This validation confirms that the services meet all operational, functional, and performance requirements, are safe and secure, and are supportable as a part of the National Airspace System. The ISD was reached for broadcast services of air traffic, as well as weather and aeronautical data information from 11 ADS-B ground stations (five at general aviation airports) in southern Florida. ITT is currently working toward deployment of broadcast services for 19 en route service volumes and deployment of surveillance services to key sites, including Louisville, Ky., Philadelphia, the Gulf of Mexico, and Juneau, Alaska.

"Achievement of this major milestone in accordance with the very aggressive ADS-B program schedule reflects a continuation of the outstanding partnership between the FAA and ITT in implementing vital national infrastructure" said Mike Wilson, president of ITT's Advanced Engineering & Sciences business. "We are proud to be a contributor to the outstanding achievements of this program and to the benefits it will deliver to the aviation industry and the flying public."

In August 2007, ITT was awarded a $207 million initial contract by the FAA to lead a team to develop and deploy the first phase of the ADS-B ground infrastructure. When fully deployed throughout the United States in 2013, the ADS-B ground infrastructure system will enable very accurate aircraft position data to be presented to air traffic controllers and will provide dramatically enhanced aircraft situational awareness. This program will allow an increasing number of aircraft to maintain safe separation, conduct more precise airport approaches and departures, and execute operations key to accommodating increased levels of air traffic.
