Nortel: Melitta Selects Nortel for Data Centre Communications Network
FRANKFURT, GERMANY--(Marketwire - May 12, 2009) - Melitta, the German company famous worldwide for household and catering products including its iconic coffee, coffee filters, and coffee makers, has modernised its communications infrastructure with a data centre solution provided by Nortel(1) (TSX:NT)(OTCBB:NRTLQ).
Working with local partner AndersRodewyk, Nortel has implemented a high-performance and energy-efficient communications network at Melitta SystemService's offices in Minden, Germany. The Minden location offices more than 350 employees engaged in the manufacture, sale and marketing of coffee machines for restaurants and hotels around the world.
By combining voice and data into a single data centre system, the new network can help Melitta's Minden-based staff improve the process efficiencies associated with sales and customer support functions of the coffee machine division.
"With our newly-deployed streamlined Nortel network, we're anticipating an increase in productivity and a decrease in the operating costs associated with our technology infrastructure," said Jurgen Staar, leader, IT from Melitta SystemService. "We estimate that the renovated data centre will enable us to reduce costs. That, in turn, will have a positive impact on our products' competitiveness."
"No one appreciates the productivity enhancements that a great cup of coffee can provide better than we do, so it's only appropriate that we repay the favour by providing a productivity-booster to Melitta," said Jorg Elsasser, business leader, Enterprise, Nortel Germany. "By delivering a highly scalable network, we are providing a solution that provides considerable reductions in their administrative costs now, and also scales to meet their growing needs of tomorrow."
Melitta's modernised data centre is based on Nortel Ethernet Router Switches (4548GT-PWR, 5000, 5520-48-PWR and 5530-24FTD). A Java-based Enterprise Switch Manager (ESM) enables real time configuration of Nortel Ethernet switching and WLAN servers, as well as administration of the more than 500 servers that are connected to the Melitta network. The system also supports changes to individual port settings and VLAN configurations, and to identify and repair defective gateways.
The Melitta communications system is also equipped with Power over Ethernet. This voice-ready IP network will enable a seamless transition to IP telephony in the future, and enable Melitta to cost-effectively implement IP phones, wireless access points, network cameras, security and lighting devices, and access control devices.
Energy efficiency was a major consideration in Melitta's decision to replace its existing network with a Nortel solution. Select Nortel products enable enterprises to reduce energy costs by over 40 percent more than comparable products in the market, according to independent tests conducted by the [ Tolly Group ](2). A study by [ InfoTech Group ](2) shows that Nortel products facilitate an up to 50 percent reduction of total costs of ownership (TCO).
