Gray Library Celebrates 50 Years of Service
Locale: UNITED STATES

GRAY, Washington County - The Gray Branch of the Washington County Public Library is marking a significant milestone this month: its 50th anniversary. From humble beginnings as a bookmobile service to its current incarnation as a vibrant community hub, the Gray Branch has consistently adapted to serve the evolving needs of Washington County residents for half a century. The celebration underscores the crucial role public libraries continue to play in the 21st century, extending far beyond simply lending books.
Established in 1976, the library initially brought books and resources directly to residents via a mobile unit. This innovative approach addressed the challenge of access for those in more rural areas of Washington County. The success of the bookmobile quickly demonstrated a clear demand for dedicated library services in Gray, leading to the opening of a permanent building in 1980 at its current location on Gray Road. That building, while serving the community well for decades, has also undergone several updates and expansions to meet growing demand and incorporate new technologies.
"We've seen a lot of changes over the years," states Carol Phillips, the current branch manager. "But our mission has always remained the same: to provide access to information and promote literacy." This commitment to core library values has been the constant through waves of technological and societal shifts.
The transition from a primarily print-based collection to a hybrid model encompassing digital resources has been particularly noteworthy. While the comforting scent of books still fills the air, the Gray Branch now boasts a robust collection of e-books, audiobooks, and online databases. Free computer access and internet connectivity are also cornerstones of the library's service, bridging the digital divide for many residents who may not have these resources at home. This focus on digital inclusion is increasingly vital, offering essential access for job searching, online learning, and staying connected with family and friends.
But the Gray Branch is much more than just books and computers. The library actively cultivates a sense of community through a diverse range of programs designed for all ages. Popular story times introduce young children to the joy of reading, fostering early literacy skills that set them up for future success. Adult book clubs provide a space for intellectual discussion and social connection. Recognizing the needs of its senior population, the library offers computer classes specifically tailored to help seniors navigate the digital world. These are just a few examples of the many initiatives that make the Gray Branch a true community center.
The library also partners with local organizations to offer workshops on topics ranging from financial literacy to health and wellness, further extending its impact beyond traditional library services. The branch consistently seeks feedback from the community to ensure its programs and resources remain relevant and responsive.
To commemorate its 50th anniversary, the Gray Branch will host a special celebration on Saturday, February 17th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees can enjoy refreshments, participate in fun activities for children, and explore a fascinating display of historical photos and documents chronicling the library's journey. This exhibit will showcase the dedicated individuals - librarians, volunteers, and community members - who have shaped the Gray Branch into the invaluable resource it is today.
Looking ahead, Phillips envisions continued growth and innovation. "We're so proud to be a part of the Gray community," she says. "We're grateful for the support we've received over the past 50 years, and we look forward to serving the community for many more years to come." The library is currently exploring possibilities for expanding its digital literacy programs and creating more collaborative spaces for community engagement. The next 50 years promise to be just as dynamic and impactful as the first, solidifying the Gray Branch Library's position as a cornerstone of the Washington County community. The library's address is 10409 Gray Road.
