Geisinger Reinstates Mask Mandates, Enhanced Safety Protocols
Locale: UNITED STATES

DANVILLE, PA - March 19, 2026 - Geisinger Health System announced today it will be reinstating enhanced safety protocols at all public entrances, effective March 30th. The move comes as health officials nationwide report a significant uptick in respiratory illnesses, including a resurgent strain of influenza and a new variant of COVID-19. While not a return to the strict measures of 2020, the protocols aim to safeguard vulnerable patients, dedicated healthcare workers, and visitors from potential exposure.
The core of the new guidelines will be universal masking. All individuals - patients, visitors, and staff - will be required to wear a mask while inside any Geisinger facility. This includes hospitals, outpatient clinics, and affiliated medical office buildings. Geisinger officials state that high-quality, surgical-grade masks will be readily available at all entrances for those who do not have one. The system is emphasizing the importance of proper mask fit to maximize effectiveness.
Beyond masking, the updated safety protocols encompass enhanced screening procedures. This will involve temperature checks and a brief questionnaire assessing individuals for symptoms consistent with respiratory illnesses. Those exhibiting signs of infection will be directed to designated areas for further evaluation and testing. Geisinger is expanding its rapid diagnostic capabilities to quickly identify the causative agent of illness, allowing for prompt and appropriate treatment.
Visitor guidelines are also being revised. While not imposing strict limitations on the number of visitors, Geisinger is strongly encouraging individuals who are feeling unwell to postpone their visits. Those who must visit patients are urged to practice diligent hand hygiene and maintain physical distancing whenever possible. The system is also exploring options for virtual visitation to provide a safe alternative for families and loved ones.
"We understand that these measures may cause some inconvenience, but we believe they are necessary to protect the health and well-being of everyone in our care," said Dr. Amelia Hayes, Chief Medical Officer at Geisinger. "We have learned valuable lessons over the past few years, and we are committed to proactively addressing emerging health threats. The health and safety of our patients, visitors, and team members remain our top priority."
The decision to reinstate these protocols wasn't taken lightly. Public health data indicates a sharp rise in positive cases of influenza A (H3N2), a particularly virulent strain, and the emergence of "Variant X," a novel COVID-19 variant showing increased transmissibility. While current vaccines appear to offer protection against severe illness, breakthrough infections are occurring, and the new variant's impact on vaccine efficacy is still being studied. The Pennsylvania Department of Health has issued a health advisory urging healthcare facilities to prepare for a potential surge in respiratory illness cases.
Geisinger is actively monitoring data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and other leading health authorities. The system stresses that these safety protocols are subject to change based on evolving public health guidance. They are prepared to scale up or down the measures as needed to respond to the changing epidemiological landscape.
Furthermore, Geisinger is encouraging the public to get their annual flu vaccine and stay up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccinations. Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death. The health system is also reinforcing the importance of other preventative measures, such as frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick.
This renewed emphasis on safety isn't unique to Geisinger. Several other major hospital systems across the state and nation are implementing similar measures, indicating a growing concern about the potential for a significant winter/spring respiratory illness season. Health experts are urging caution and emphasizing the need for collective action to protect public health. Geisinger has created a dedicated webpage - [ https://www.geisinger.org/safetyprotocols ] - providing detailed information about the new protocols, frequently asked questions, and resources for preventing the spread of respiratory illnesses.
