Fleetwood Police Receive $56,000 Grant for Protective Gear
Locale: UNITED STATES

FLEETWOOD, Pa. - March 19th, 2026 - The Fleetwood Police Department in Berks County has received a crucial financial injection to bolster officer safety, securing a $56,000 grant dedicated to updating essential protective equipment. This funding, obtained through the competitive Office of the Attorney General's District Attorney's Resiliency (DAR) Grant Program, will directly address the critical need to replace aging ballistic vests and other vital protective gear currently utilized by officers.
The announcement comes at a time of increased scrutiny regarding law enforcement safety and well-being, nationally and locally. While Fleetwood enjoys a reputation as a relatively safe community, Police Chief Steven Stoudt emphasized that proactive investment in officer protection is paramount, regardless of crime statistics. "We are committed to providing our officers with the best possible tools to perform their duties effectively and return home safely at the end of each shift," Chief Stoudt stated in a press conference earlier today. "This grant allows us to do just that."
Ballistic vests, the primary component of the upgrade, have a limited lifespan and require periodic replacement. The current vests used by Fleetwood officers are approaching the end of their certified protection period, meaning their ability to adequately defend against modern threats is diminishing. The DAR Grant will enable the department to procure state-of-the-art vests offering enhanced protection against a wider range of ammunition types, as well as improved comfort and mobility for officers.
Beyond ballistic vests, the grant will also cover the cost of replacing other crucial protective equipment, including potentially helmets, gloves, and potentially even advanced communication devices. The specifics of the additional purchases are still being finalized, based on a thorough assessment of departmental needs. The department is consulting with officers in the field to identify equipment that would most significantly enhance their safety and operational effectiveness.
According to the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General's website, the DAR Grant Program was established to support law enforcement agencies in addressing the unique challenges they face, including increased stress, trauma, and the need for specialized equipment. The program recognizes that resilient law enforcement agencies are essential for maintaining public safety and building trust within the communities they serve. The competitive nature of the grant underscores the high demand for resources amongst Pennsylvania's police forces.
This investment in Fleetwood's police force isn't solely about protecting officers; it's also about protecting the community. Well-equipped and confident officers are better positioned to respond effectively to emergencies, de-escalate potentially dangerous situations, and maintain order. A safer police department translates directly into a safer community for residents.
The Borough of Fleetwood has expressed strong support for the police department's grant application and the subsequent funding. Mayor Tammy Lauer highlighted the importance of prioritizing public safety in the town's budget. "We are extremely grateful for the Attorney General's office recognizing the needs of our police department. This funding demonstrates a commitment to supporting law enforcement at the local level," she said.
The Fleetwood Police Department anticipates the new equipment will be fully deployed within the next quarter, following a period of fitting and training. The department will also be hosting a public demonstration in April to showcase the upgraded gear and answer questions from the community. The department believes transparency in these matters is key to fostering strong community relationships. They are also actively exploring additional grant opportunities to further enhance officer safety and community policing initiatives.
This grant serves as a reminder of the vital role local police departments play in maintaining the safety and security of our communities, and the importance of providing them with the resources they need to do their jobs effectively.
