Lenox Seeks Resident Input on Affordable Housing
Locale: UNITED STATES

LENOX, Massachusetts - January 31st, 2026 - The Town of Lenox is taking a proactive step towards addressing a growing need for affordable housing with a series of upcoming community visioning sessions. Organized by the Lenox Affordable Housing Trust, these sessions aim to gather invaluable input from residents to guide the development of a comprehensive and sustainable affordable housing strategy for the town.
The initiative comes on the heels of a recent audit revealing critical gaps in Lenox's current affordable housing stock, specifically for seniors, families, and low-income individuals. While Lenox is known for its cultural richness and scenic beauty, the escalating cost of living has placed significant strain on long-term residents and those seeking to establish roots in the community. The lack of diverse housing options is increasingly seen as a threat to the town's character and future vibrancy.
The Affordable Housing Trust, established in 2022, has been diligently working to understand the scope of the challenge and explore potential solutions. However, recognizing that a truly effective strategy requires broad community buy-in, the Trust is now turning to residents for their ideas and priorities. "We really want to hear from the community about their vision for what affordable housing could look like in Lenox and what their priorities are," explained Trust Chairwoman Elizabeth Stevens. "This isn't about us deciding what's best; it's about collaboratively building a future where everyone, regardless of income, can afford to live and thrive in Lenox."
The visioning sessions, scheduled to begin on March 6th at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, will cover a wide spectrum of topics. Discussions will focus on the types of affordable housing that would best suit the needs of the community - ranging from single-family homes and apartments to co-housing and innovative models like accessory dwelling units (ADUs). Crucially, the sessions will also delve into location considerations. Finding appropriate sites for affordable housing development within Lenox presents unique challenges, given the town's topography, environmental regulations, and existing residential neighborhoods. The Trust is committed to exploring all viable options, including adaptive reuse of existing buildings and partnerships with local landowners.
Beyond housing type and location, the sessions will also explore potential funding opportunities. The Trust has already secured $750,000 in funding through the Community Preservation Act (CPA), a dedicated funding source for open space, historic preservation, and affordable housing. However, this amount represents just a starting point. The Trust is actively researching and applying for additional state and federal grants, as well as exploring private funding partnerships and philanthropic contributions.
The sessions are not simply brainstorming exercises. The Trust intends to use the information gathered to develop a prioritized list of projects and initiatives. This will inform the development of a formal Affordable Housing Plan, which will serve as a roadmap for the next five to ten years. The plan will outline specific goals, strategies, and timelines for increasing the availability of affordable housing in Lenox.
Local real estate experts predict that the need for affordable housing will only intensify in the coming years. Rising interest rates, limited housing supply, and increasing demand from remote workers are all contributing factors. Without proactive intervention, Lenox risks becoming increasingly exclusive, losing the diversity that makes it such a special place.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the visioning sessions and share their thoughts and ideas. Detailed information, including session dates, times, and registration instructions, can be found on the Town of Lenox website at [ https://www.lenoxct.us/affordable-housing-trust ]. The Trust also plans to utilize online surveys and other engagement tools to reach a wider audience and ensure that all voices are heard. This inclusive approach is viewed as vital to the success of the initiative. The Trust hopes to create a model for other small towns in Berkshire County grappling with similar housing challenges.
