Canadian Oil Sands Limited Launches Community Investment Initiative- Math Minds

Official Launch of Math Minds with Former Olympians to be held at St. Rita School

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 21, 2012) - Canadian Oil Sands Limited (TSX:COS) (OTCQX:COSWF)

WHAT: Canadian Oil Sands Limited (COS) is launching a multi-year community investment initiative. The overall objectives of the initiative are to strengthen numeracy among teachers and students in kindergarten to grade six, and to help establish Calgary with a stronger presence in math education. By creating a teachers' network focused on math and sharing the most recent research on elementary math instruction and student learning, Math Minds strives to deepen teachers own understanding of math and math instruction. Math Minds Partners include: Canadian Oil Sands, University of Calgary - Faculty of Education, Calgary Catholic School District, Calgary Public Library, Boys & Girls Club of Calgary, and JUMP Math.

WHY: In order for Canada to remain globally competitive in an increasingly innovative and technologically advanced world, it is imperative that our society place a high importance on early math literacy. The leaders of tomorrow, our nation's children, will also benefit from numeracy. Not only is numeracy critical for success in one of the richest expected sources of future employment - careers in science, technology, engineering and math - but anecdotal evidence suggests that increased confidence in math and problem-solving can lead to enhanced self-assurance in other areas of children's lives.

COS is excited to champion Math Minds and empower children by becoming math literate through a long-term, collaborative, foundation-building approach focused on early math literacy.
