Over the past decade, equity has been the top-performing asset on five different occasions. Gold, too, took the top spot for four years, data shows.

The article from Moneycontrol discusses the performance of various investment options over a one-year period starting from January 2024. If an investor had allocated Rs 1 lakh across different asset classes like stocks, debt, gold, and real estate, here's how their investments would have fared by January 2025:

  • Stocks: The Indian stock market, represented by indices like the Nifty 50 and Sensex, saw significant growth. An investment in the Nifty 50 would have grown by about 20%, turning Rs 1 lakh into Rs 1.20 lakh. Midcap and smallcap stocks performed even better, with returns around 50-60%.

  • Debt: Fixed income securities like government securities and corporate bonds provided steady but lower returns. An investment in a 10-year government bond would have yielded around 7%, making the investment worth Rs 1.07 lakh.

  • Gold: Gold prices increased by approximately 10% over the year, so Rs 1 lakh invested in gold would have appreciated to Rs 1.10 lakh.

  • Real Estate: Real estate markets showed mixed results, with some regions experiencing growth while others remained flat or slightly declined. Assuming a moderate growth of 5%, the investment would be worth Rs 1.05 lakh.

The article highlights the importance of diversification, noting that while stocks provided the highest returns, they also come with higher risk, whereas debt and gold offer stability and act as a hedge against inflation and market volatility.
