For years, visitors with mobility limitations, visual impairments, or other disabilities have encountered hurdles navigating Door County's diverse terrain, historic buildings, and popular attractions. Jennifer Willis, Director of Communications for the Door County Tourism Bureau, emphasizes the importance of this feedback loop. "We are actively collecting input from individuals with disabilities who have visited or lived in Door County. Their personal experiences are invaluable in identifying areas where we can improve," she states. "We want to ensure that everyone can enjoy all that Door County has to offer, from the state parks and lighthouses to the art galleries and farm-to-table restaurants."

The initiative is firmly rooted in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which mandates reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities. However, Door County's approach goes beyond simply meeting legal requirements. The goal is to create a truly welcoming and inclusive environment, fostering a sense of belonging for all visitors.

Pearson notes that accessibility benefits everyone - not just individuals with disabilities. "Accessible trails are enjoyable for families with strollers, seniors with limited mobility, and anyone who appreciates a smooth, well-maintained path," she points out. "Creating an accessible environment ultimately enhances the experience for all visitors."

The Door County Tourism Bureau and Peninsula Wheel envision a future where Door County is recognized as a leader in accessible tourism. This is a long-term commitment, requiring ongoing effort and collaboration, but the early momentum is encouraging.
