Cobb's Creek Golf Course Restoration Nears Completion
Locales: Pennsylvania, UNITED STATES

PHILADELPHIA, PA - March 16th, 2026 - After years of planning and dedicated fundraising, the ambitious restoration of Cobb's Creek Golf Course is nearing completion, poised to return a historic Philadelphia landmark to its former glory. The project, a collaboration between the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation department, the Friends of Cobb's Creek Golf Course, and numerous private donors, addresses decades of deterioration while meticulously preserving the course's distinctive 1930s character.
Originally opened in 1930, Cobb's Creek quickly established itself as a beloved public golf destination, attracting players of all skill levels. However, time and the elements took their toll. Persistent drainage issues plagued the fairways, leading to consistently soggy conditions, especially after rainfall. The course's bunkers, once strategically challenging, succumbed to erosion and disrepair. The fairways themselves had become uneven and worn, impacting playability and aesthetic appeal.
"Cobb's Creek isn't just a golf course; it's a vital part of the Philadelphia landscape and a source of pride for the community," explains Parks & Recreation Commissioner Vanessa Brinson. "For nearly a century, it's provided an accessible and affordable option for golfers. This restoration isn't simply about fixing a golf course, it's about ensuring a treasured public asset is available for generations to come."
The comprehensive restoration, which officially broke ground in late 2024, isn't a complete redesign. Instead, it's a carefully considered effort to restore the course to its original intent. Leading the architectural work are renowned golf course restoration specialists, chosen for their expertise in preserving the historical integrity of classic courses. They have delved into archival photographs, original blueprints, and historical accounts to understand the course's original design philosophy.
"Our guiding principle throughout this project has been respect for the original architect's vision," states Robert Adams, President of the Friends of Cobb's Creek Golf Course. "We didn't want to impose a modern design onto a classic layout. We wanted to reveal the beauty and challenge that Cobb's Creek always possessed."
Key components of the restoration include:
- Advanced Drainage System: A completely overhauled drainage infrastructure is the cornerstone of the project. This includes a network of subsurface drainage pipes and improved grading to effectively manage water runoff, ensuring consistently dry and playable conditions, even after heavy rain. This addresses the long-standing issue that has plagued the course for decades.
- Fairway Restoration: Fairways are being regraded and re-grassed with a resilient, modern turf variety that mimics the original playing characteristics while providing improved durability and visual appeal. The goal is to restore smooth, consistent playing surfaces.
- Bunker Revival: Bunkers are being meticulously reconstructed to their original shapes, sizes, and positions. Sand composition is also being carefully selected to provide optimal playability and consistency. The restoration team has paid particular attention to restoring the strategic challenges posed by the bunkers, ensuring they remain a key feature of the course.
- Greens Refurbishment: While maintaining the original green sizes and contours, the greens have received attention to improve their surface smoothness and putting quality.
The $8.2 million project is funded through a diverse funding model. Private donations from golf enthusiasts and local philanthropists account for approximately 40% of the cost. The City of Philadelphia has allocated significant funds from its Parks & Recreation budget, recognizing the project's public benefit. Additionally, the project received a substantial grant from the National Golf Foundation, highlighting the national significance of the restoration effort.
As the project nears completion, anticipation is building within the Philadelphia golf community. A grand re-opening event is planned for late spring, promising a first look at the revitalized Cobb's Creek Golf Course. Initial play is expected to be by reservation, allowing the new turf to establish itself fully.
"We believe this restoration will not only improve the playability of the course but also attract new golfers and contribute to the economic vitality of the surrounding neighborhood," adds Adams. "Cobb's Creek has a rich history, and we're confident that this project will ensure its legacy continues for another 94 years and beyond."
