It supplies carbon pitch used in the production of aluminum and for the production of steel in electric arc furnaces; naphthalene used for the production of phthalic anhydride and as a surfactant in the production of concrete; phthalic anhydride used in the production of plasticizers, polyester resins, and alkyd paints; creosote used in the treatment of wood; carbon black feedstock used in the production of carbon black; and carbon black used primarily in the production of rubber tires. This segment also sells refined tars, benzole, and specialty chemicals. The Railroad and Utility Products segment sells treated and untreated wood products and services primarily to the railroad and public utility markets in the United States and Australia. This segment involves in procuring and treating items, such as crossties, switch ties, and various types of lumber used for railroad bridges and crossings. It also offers utility products, including transmission and distribution poles and pilings to electric and telephone utility industries. The company was formerly known as KI Holdings, Inc. Koppers Holdings Inc. was founded in 1988 and is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
