The company operates through two segments, Water Products and Electrical Products. The Water Products segment manufactures and markets a line of residential gas and electric water heaters; standard and specialty commercial water heating equipment for restaurants, hotels and motels, laundries, car washes, and small businesses; copper-tube boilers; water treatment products; and water systems tanks. This segment sells its products through independent wholesale plumbing distributors, as well as through retail channel. The Electrical Products segment offers hermetic motors for air conditioning and commercial refrigeration compressors; and fractional horsepower fan motors for use in furnaces, air conditioners, and blowers. It also provides fractional horsepower motors for pumps for home water systems, swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas, as well as for garage door openers; and integral horsepower AC and DC motors for industrial and commercial applications. It primarily sells it products to original equipment manufacturers of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. This segment also sells its products through aftermarket or distribution channels. The company has a joint venture with Takagi Industrial Co. Ltd. to manufacture and market tankless water heaters in North America. A. O. Smith Corporation is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
