Livingston Parish Schools Launches Parish-Wide Arts Program

ALBANY, LA - March 26th, 2026 - Livingston Parish Public Schools (LPPS) is dramatically expanding its commitment to arts education with the full-scale rollout of "Curtain Up Livingston," a program designed to immerse students in the world of professional theater. What began as a successful pilot project at Albany High School is now poised to become a parish-wide initiative, promising to reshape the landscape of arts opportunities for students across Livingston Parish.
The core concept behind Curtain Up Livingston is simple yet impactful: bring the professionals to the students. Instead of relying solely on existing school resources and often-limited teacher expertise in theatrical production, the program actively recruits and partners with working actors, set designers, costume creators, lighting technicians, and directors to collaborate directly with LPPS students on full-scale theatrical productions. This hands-on approach moves beyond basic classroom instruction and thrusts students into a real-world creative environment.
"We realized that while we had dedicated teachers doing amazing work, there was a gap in exposing students to the practical, professional side of theater," explains Katie Brown, Curtain Up Livingston coordinator. "Seeing how a professional set is built, understanding the nuances of lighting design, receiving feedback from working actors - these experiences are invaluable and inspire a level of engagement you just can't replicate in a traditional setting."
The initial pilot program at Albany High School proved the concept's viability. Students were involved in every aspect of the production, from auditioning for roles and rehearsing lines to constructing sets, designing costumes, and managing the technical elements of the show. The production, a locally adapted version of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, received overwhelmingly positive reviews from the community and garnered significant student participation. Beyond the performance itself, the program demonstrably boosted student confidence, teamwork skills, and creative problem-solving abilities.
The Livingston Arts Council has been a vital partner in the program's development and expansion. Providing both funding and logistical support, the council recognizes the critical role arts education plays in fostering well-rounded individuals and a vibrant community. "Investing in our students' artistic development is an investment in the future of Livingston Parish," states Eleanor Vance, President of the Livingston Arts Council.
