Should Americans Still Be Investing in Stocks?

This 2025, the U.S. economy and stock market faced a shift, with weaker economic data fueling slowdown fears and underperformance against global peers. Volatility increased, signaling changing market drivers.

According to a recent survey by Bankrate, despite economic uncertainties, a significant number of Americans continue to invest in the stock market, with 56% of U.S. adults currently holding stocks either directly or through retirement accounts. The survey highlights a generational divide in investment approaches: Millennials and Gen Z are more likely to invest in individual stocks, with 21% of them doing so compared to only 13% of Gen X and 7% of Baby Boomers. This trend among younger investors is driven by a desire for potentially higher returns and a willingness to take on more risk. However, the survey also notes that overall stock ownership has slightly declined from 61% in 2021, possibly due to market volatility and economic concerns. Despite this, the enduring appeal of stocks as a long-term investment vehicle remains strong among Americans.
