August 13, 2012 / M2 PRESSWIRE / BUYINS.NET / www.buyins.net, announced today its proprietary Market Maker Friction Factor Report for Monday. Since October 2008 market makers are now required to be on the bid as much as they are on the offer and for like amounts of stock. This Fair Market Making Requirement is designed to prevent market makers from manipulating stock prices. On Monday there were 4164 companies with "abnormal" market making, 2205 companies with positive Friction Factors and 2999 companies with negative Friction Factors. Here is a list of the top companies with the largest percentage loss per share Monday and low price friction (bearish). This means that there was more selling than buying in the stocks and their stock prices dropped faster with less Friction. Otelco Inc (NASDAQ:OTT), SciClone Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SCLN), POLYMET MINING CORP (AMEX:PLM), Groupon Inc (NASDAQ:GRPN), InfoSonics Corp (NASDAQ:IFON), Summer Infant Inc (NASDAQ:SUMR). Market Maker Friction Factor is shown in the chart below:

Symbol Change Percent Buy Volume Buy %% Sell Volume Sell %% Net Volume Friction
  OTT $-0.400 -13.11% 361,428 42.61% 486,120 57.31% -124,692 -3,117
  SCLN $-0.850 -14.91% 776,103 38.41% 1,243,403 61.53% -467,300 -5,498
  PLM $-0.150 -12.70% 111,529 19.44% 180,404 31.44% -68,875 -4,592
  GRPN $-0.960 -12.90% 12,496,949 47.50% 13,722,844 52.16% -1,225,895 -12,770
  IFON $-0.210 -13.64% 49,739 37.76% 81,973 62.24% -32,234 -1,535
  SUMR $-0.860 -27.39% 27,229 46.98% 30,725 53.02% -3,496 -41
Analysis of the Friction Factor chart above shows that each of the six stocks mentioned above have high net dollar losses (Change) and extremely low price friction in their stocks. The Friction Factor displays how many more shares of buying than selling are required to move a stock higher by one cent or how many more shares of selling than buying moves a stock lower by 1 cent.

For example, the chart above shows OTT with a dollar loss Monday of $-0.40000 and a Friction Factor of -3,117 shares. That means that it only took 3,117 more shares of selling than buying to move OTT lower by one penny. This means the Market Makers are allowing the stock to drop quickly (low friction). The combination of low friction and negative market direction can drive prices lower faster than normal.
