Lands' End Spring Break Survey reveals families will be staying close to home

DODGEVILLE, Wis., March 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Spring break is all the buzz this time of year and a majority of Americans (78 percent) will forgo the flights and instead opt for the "stay-cation," citing cost (73 percent) as the main reason.  In a recent survey conducted by Lands' End, 60 percent of respondents said that their "ideal" spring break vacation was one that wouldn't break the bank. When asked what they enjoy most about spring break, 83 percent said spending time with the kids and family, 62 percent said it signals spring is on the way, and 53 percent said exploring undiscovered local attractions.

While people are voting for "stay-cations," it doesn't mean they are staying home.  In fact, 81 percent of respondents consider visiting local attractions like museums as a great way to celebrate time off from school and work.  And, nearly six out of ten listed play dates (59 percent), visiting friends and relatives (59 percent) and 44 percent cited going to water parks as a way to splash some fun into spring break.

"'Stay-cations' allow families to take a break from their normal routine and spend quality time together," said Susan Sachatello, chief marketing officer, Lands' End.  "Whether taking a day trip to see an art exhibit, splashing at a water park or simply taking time to catch up, spring break is a great time to have some fun and usher in spring."

While families may not be splurging on extravagant seaside vacations, moms still say they will be transitioning into spring and that includes refreshing their kids' wardrobes.  In fact, seven out of ten (70 percent) reported that they will spend the same or more than last year on new kids' spring apparel and accessories. When asked about spring essentials, tees (83 percent), sandals (73 percent), shorts (69 percent) and swimwear (66 percent) are the must-haves they plan to purchase.

In the spirit of celebrating spring break, Lands' End will be offering great values and daily spring "breaks" on warm weather items, such as beach towels, polo shirts, shorts and crops at landsend.com through March 7.
