In February, foreign investors reduced their holdings in Indian mutual fund schemes by nearly Rs 2,900 crore, influenced by concerns over a potential tariff war between the US and India, as well as worries about high valuations in the US market. This divestment was part of a broader trend where foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold off Indian equities, with a net outflow of Rs 5,294 crore during the same month. The decline in investment was attributed to fears of escalating trade tensions, particularly after the US announced plans to end duty-free access for certain Indian exports, prompting India to consider retaliatory tariffs. Additionally, the high valuations in the US market led investors to rebalance their portfolios, reducing exposure to emerging markets like India. This shift was also reflected in the performance of the Indian stock market, which saw a downturn in February.
