Vietnam PM Hopes U.S. Will Recognise Country as Market Economy

  • HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh told a business summit on Wednesday that he hoped the United States would recognise Vietnam as a market economy, noting that more than 70 other countries already did. Chinh also said that foreign investment flows into Vietnam this year were expected to total around $25 billion.

Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed hope that the United States will recognize Vietnam as a market economy during his meeting with U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo in San Francisco. This recognition would help Vietnam gain better trade terms and reduce the impact of anti-dumping duties. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, where both leaders also talked about deepening economic ties, addressing trade disputes, and enhancing cooperation in technology, innovation, and climate change initiatives. The U.S. recognition of Vietnam as a market economy could significantly boost Vietnam's export capabilities and economic growth.
