Since October 2008 market makers are now required to be on the bid as much as they are on the offer and for like amounts of stock. This Fair Market Making Requirement is designed to prevent market makers from manipulating stock prices. On Friday there were 4113 companies with "abnormal" market making, 3242 companies with positive Friction Factors and 2081 companies with negative Friction Factors. Here is a list of the top companies with Abnormal Price Friction (bullish bias) in their stock prices. This means that there was more selling than buying in the stocks and their stock prices rose. Avon Products Inc (NYSE:AVP), EMC Corp (NYSE:EMC), Sprint Nextel Corp (NYSE:S), Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), Fidelity National Information Services Inc (NYSE:FIS), Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc (NYSE:SMFG). Symbol Change Percent Buy Volume Buy %% Sell Volume Sell %% Net Volume Friction AVP $0.030 0.21% 927,420 15.98% 3,471,089 59.79% -2,543,669 Abnormal EMC $0.690 2.63% 4,689,766 23.95% 6,573,506 33.57% -1,883,740 Abnormal S $0.020 0.39% 15,834,048 36.06% 17,874,110 40.71% -2,040,062 Abnormal HD $0.540 0.96% 2,848,775 25.29% 3,944,767 35.03% -1,095,992 Abnormal FIS $0.270 0.87% 375,758 6.47% 2,901,399 49.99% -2,525,641 Abnormal SMFG $0.200 3.23% 1,059,786 8.33% 3,384,143 26.59% -2,324,357 AbnormalAnalysis of the Friction Factor chart above shows that each of the six stocks mentioned above had more selling than buying on Friday and their stock prices rose. The Friction Factor displays how many more shares of buying than selling are required to move a stock higher by one cent or how many more shares of selling than buying moves a stock lower by 1 cent.
For example, the chart above shows AVP with 2,543,669 greater shares of selling than buying (NetVol) and the stock price was up $0.03000. This means the Market Makers were trading the stock in a way inconsistent with normal supply and demand (Economics 101); more selling than buying should cause prices to drop.
