May 31, 2012 / M2 PRESSWIRE / BUYINS.NET / www.buyins.net, announced today its proprietary Market Maker Friction Factor Report for Thursday. Since October 2008 market makers are now required to be on the bid as much as they are on the offer and for like amounts of stock. This Fair Market Making Requirement is designed to prevent market makers from manipulating stock prices. On Thursday there were 3786 companies with "abnormal" market making, 2608 companies with positive Friction Factors and 3054 companies with negative Friction Factors. Here is a list of the top companies with the largest percentage loss per share Thursday and low price friction (bearish). This means that there was more selling than buying in the stocks and their stock prices dropped faster with less Friction. SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACT-ADR (NYSE:SMI), HAMPTON ROADS BANKSHARES INC (NASDAQ:HMPR), NATIONAL BANK OF GREECE-ADR (NYSE:NBG), EAGLE BULK SHIPPING INC (NASDAQ:EGLE), CHELSEA THERAPEUTICS INTERNATIONAL, LTD. Market Maker Friction Factor is shown in the chart below:
Symbol Change Percent Buy Volume Buy %% Sell Volume Sell %% Net Volume Friction SMI $-0.240 -12.90% 54,897 18.10% 153,880 50.74% -98,983 -4,124 HMPR $-0.310 -18.13% 130,655 47.56% 144,062 52.44% -13,407 -432 NBG $-0.200 -13.89% 948,260 20.21% 1,967,450 41.93% -1,019,190 -50,960 EGLE $-0.320 -9.61% 189,114 45.91% 222,829 54.09% -33,715 -1,054 CHTP $-0.610 -31.28% 2,722,510 49.84% 2,740,243 50.16% -17,733 -291 AONE $-0.120 -10.53% 1,435,738 42.31% 1,957,493 57.69% -521,755 -43,480Analysis of the Friction Factor chart above shows that each of the six stocks mentioned above have high net dollar losses (Change) and extremely low price friction in their stocks. The Friction Factor displays how many more shares of buying than selling are required to move a stock higher by one cent or how many more shares of selling than buying moves a stock lower by 1 cent.
For example, the chart above shows SMI with a dollar loss Thursday of $-0.24000 and a Friction Factor of -4,124 shares. That means that it only took 4,124 more shares of selling than buying to move SMI lower by one penny. This means the Market Makers are allowing the stock to drop quickly (low friction). The combination of low friction and negative market direction can drive prices lower faster than normal.
