Since October 2008 market makers are now required to be on the bid as much as they are on the offer and for like amounts of stock. This Fair Market Making Requirement is designed to prevent market makers from manipulating stock prices. On Monday there were 3801 companies with "abnormal" market making, 2741 companies with positive Friction Factors and 2957 companies with negative Friction Factors. Here is a list of the top companies with Abnormal Price Friction (bearish bias) in their stock prices. This means that there was more buying than selling in the stocks and their stock prices dropped. MICRON TECHNOLOGY INC (NASDAQ:MU), J.C. PENNEY CO INC (NYSE:JCP), LSI CORP (NYSE:LSI), AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL GROUP (NYSE:AIG), ALLSTATE CORP (NYSE:ALL), PPL CORPORATION (NYSE:PPL). Symbol Change Percent Buy Volume Buy %% Sell Volume Sell %% Net Volume Friction MU $-0.050 -0.78% 18,750,559 51.25% 17,789,564 48.63% 960,995 Abnormal JCP $-0.250 -0.74% 2,104,271 38.12% 1,259,867 22.82% 844,404 Abnormal LSI $-0.030 -0.38% 2,877,099 39.72% 1,839,201 25.39% 1,037,898 Abnormal AIG $-0.990 -3.02% 58,731,539 38.34% 51,332,844 33.51% 7,398,695 Abnormal ALL $-0.020 -0.04% 2,272,200 35.43% 1,280,063 19.96% 992,137 Abnormal PPL $-0.060 -0.23% 1,526,302 48.57% 678,377 21.59% 847,925 AbnormalAnalysis of the Friction Factor chart above shows that each of the six stocks mentioned above had more buying than selling on Monday and their stock prices dropped. The Friction Factor displays how many more shares of buying than selling are required to move a stock higher by one cent or how many more shares of selling than buying moves a stock lower by 1 cent.
For example, the chart above shows MU with 960,995 greater shares of buying than selling (NetVol) and the stock price was down $-0.05000. This means the Market Makers were trading the stock in a way inconsistent with normal supply and demand (Economics 101); more buying than selling should cause prices to rise.
