February 17, 2011 / M2 PRESSWIRE / BUYINS.NET / www.buyins.net, announced today its proprietary Market Maker Friction Factor Report for Thursday. Since October 2008 market makers are now required to be on the bid as much as they are on the offer and for like amounts of stock. This Fair Market Making Requirement is designed to prevent market makers from manipulating stock prices. On Thursday there were 2663 companies with "abnormal" market making, 3182 companies with positive Friction Factors and 2100 companies with negative Friction Factors. Here is a list of the top companies with the largest percentage loss per share Thursday and low price friction (bearish). This means that there was more selling than buying in the stocks and their stock prices dropped faster with less Friction. THRESHOLD PHARMACEUTICALS (NASDAQ:THLD), BUILD-A-BEAR WORKSHOP INC (NYSE:BBW), ULTRALIFE CORP (NASDAQ:ULBI), SOUTHERN COMMUNITY FINANCIAL (NASDAQ:SCMF), K-SWISS INC -CL A (NASDAQ:KSWS), TASTY BAKING CO (NASDAQ:TSTY). Market Maker Friction Factor is shown in the chart below:
Symbol Change Percent Buy Volume Buy %% Sell Volume Sell %% Net Volume Friction THLD $-0.450 -16.36% 2,059,150 42.66% 2,766,843 57.32% -707,693 -15,727 BBW $-0.960 -12.17% 246,998 37.43% 357,745 54.22% -110,747 -1,154 ULBI $-0.650 -10.64% 240,794 35.22% 439,667 64.31% -198,873 -3,060 SCMF $-0.280 -18.92% 71,921 35.63% 129,248 64.03% -57,327 -2,047 KSWS $-1.210 -10.81% 214,975 34.74% 376,934 60.92% -161,959 -1,339 TSTY $-0.270 -10.31% 129,313 37.28% 195,103 56.24% -65,790 -2,437
Analysis of the Friction Factor chart above shows that each of the six stocks mentioned above have high net dollar losses (Change) and extremely low price friction in their stocks. The Friction Factor displays how many more shares of buying than selling are required to move a stock higher by one cent or how many more shares of selling than buying moves a stock lower by 1 cent.
For example, the chart above shows TSTY with a dollar loss Thursday of $-0.27000 and a Friction Factor of -2,437 shares. That means that it only took 2,437 more shares of selling than buying to move TSTY lower by one penny. This means the Market Makers are allowing the stock to drop quickly (low friction). The combination of low friction and negative market direction can drive prices lower faster than normal.
