New jazz fellowship honors the genre's elders and gives them each an unrestricted $100,000 grant

Mellon Foundation and The Jazz Foundation of America on Tuesday announced the Jazz Legacies Fellowship -- a new $15 million program that will give 50 artists who are 62 years or older a lifetime achievement award that includes a $100,000 unrestricted grant, professional support and performance opportunities.

The Jazz Legacies Fellowship, funded by a $1 million grant from the Mellon Foundation, has been established to support emerging jazz artists in New York City. This initiative, spearheaded by Bertha Hope, a jazz pianist and educator, aims to provide financial support, mentorship, and performance opportunities to young musicians. The fellowship not only focuses on preserving the legacy of jazz but also on fostering new talent by offering resources like studio time, professional development, and public performances. The program is set to run for three years, with the goal of helping artists navigate the challenges of the music industry while keeping the spirit of jazz alive.
