Iowa immigration law remains blocked, US appeals court says, but second lawsuit to be dismissed

The U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals has decided to keep a block on an Iowa law that would have allowed state officials to charge individuals with illegal reentry into the U.S., a power typically reserved for federal authorities. This decision upholds a lower court's injunction against the law, which was set to take effect on July 1. However, in a related development, the same court dismissed a separate lawsuit challenging the law, stating that the plaintiffs lacked standing. This dismissal was based on the fact that the law had not yet been enforced, and thus, the plaintiffs could not prove they would be directly affected. The law in question, Senate File 2340, was signed by Governor Kim Reynolds in April, aiming to address illegal immigration at the state level.
